10 states and cities that are handing out incentive checks and other payments before Christmas

Before Christmas, many Americans can expect payment from their state or local government.

The money can be sent as a one-time incentive check or as Universal Basic Income, which is a series of recurring payments.

But either way, Americans will get some cash for the holidays.

We explain the states and cities that could send you a check before the end of the year.

1. California

As part of the Golden State Stimulus II program, it is estimated that a total of nine million Californians will receive checks before the end of the year.

We’ll explain the exact dates when you’ll receive your check, if you haven’t received one yet.

At the initiative of California, a resident who earns less than $75,000 per year and has filed taxes before October 15, 2020 is eligible for the payment.

2. Florida

Florida could send incentive payments to pre-K first responders through 12th grade teachers in December. If they qualify, those people can receive a one-time payment of $1,000.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said the program aims to help approximately 175,000 teachers and 3,600 principals.

3. Maine

Maine state residents began receiving incentive payments on Nov. 15.

The one-time payments of $285 will go to more than half a million residents.

Eligible applicants are single applicants who earn less than $75,000 per year and couples who earn $150,000 or less.

The state will continue to send them until the end of the year.

4. Maryland

The poorest families and individuals in Maryland get stimulus checks.

Eligible families get checks for $500, while individuals can get $300 in payments.

Families can also get more money through tax refunds over the next three years. Families with two children earning $25,000 could potentially receive $1,100 per year.

5. Seattle

Low-income Seattle residents can get a stimulus check worth up to $3,000, but the deadline to apply was Nov. 15.

Under the Seattle Relief Fund, applicants must be 18 years of age or older.

And you must have an income that is less than 50% of Seattle’s median income, which is less than $40,500 for an individual or $57,850 for a family of four.

6. Colombia

In September, Columbia began sending recurring payments to 100 low-income fathers.

The payments, worth $500, are loaded onto debit cards and sent for a total of 12 months.

The one-year pilot program is called the Columbia Life Improvement Monetary Boost (CLIMB).

It aims to examine the potential impact on guaranteed income to address poverty, inequality and financial instability.

7. Chicago

UBI payments will continue to low-income households in the windy city.

Eligible families who earn less than $35,000 each year will receive $500 in monthly payments.

The participants are chosen at random, which means that you cannot register yourself.

8. New Orleans

Louisiana teens receive $350 in monthly payments as part of the state’s financial literacy program.

The first set of payments will take place in December and will be repeated for 10 months.

To be eligible, you must be between the ages of 16 and 24 and be unemployed or out of school.

9. Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh plans to use some of its Covid funds to provide assistance to 200 low-income households.

Specifically, those households will receive $500 per month in payments for two years.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto said the city will begin making payments later this year.

10. Santa Claus

A California city appears to be getting more money on top of state incentives.

As part of the Revive Santa Ana Resident Stimulus Program, a total of $6 million in payments will be made to poor neighborhoods in the city.

The $300 payments loaded onto prepaid Visa debit cards will go to 20,000 “rental units” in Santa Ana, California.

According to a statement from the city last week, people with poverty rates above the Santa Ana median of 42% are eligible for the aid.

While there was no concrete date for the payments to be made, Santa Ana said it will ship them in “the next few weeks.”

Next year, millions of Americans could get another round of stimulus thanks to a $31 billion surplus.

In addition, Illinois lawmakers proposed incentive payments worth up to $400.

We explain how families with children under 13 can get a surprising $8,000 incentive payment.
