12 states taxing social benefits: 2022

Can pensioners get a break in social security taxation? At the federal level, nearly half of all households can pay taxes on some of their social security benefits, a recent Senior Citizens League survey showed. And in addition, 12 U.S. states tax social security at different income levels. At the end of 2021, North Dakota voted to do away with the tax completely.

February the 17th The New Mexico Legislature passed a bill it would raise the level of income at which social security benefits would be taxed. It is awaiting the signature of Governor Michell Lujan, who supports the change.

Many of these states have some of the oldest populations. According to US Census Bureau, In 2019, every fifth person in Maine, Florida, West Virginia and Vermont was 65 years of age or older. West Virginia and Vermont still have state taxes on social security.
