JEFFERSON COUNTY – A 42-year veteran of the Cedar Hill Fire Protection District died of COVID-19 earlier this month.

Battalion chief Marvin Shaffrey, 55, died on Nov. 2. A Facebook post on the district page highlighted his award-winning career and his reputation as “a wonderful mentor, friend, leader and role model.”

His death is considered “in the line of duty” as he died of COVID-19. Shaffrey started out as a junior firefighter at age 13.

The nonprofit Backstoppers, which helps the surviving relatives of first responders who die on the job, has started a fundraiser to help his wife and two daughters.
