5 social benefits you can claim online

Applying for and receiving social benefits can be confusing – but these five can easily be claimed online. Before signing up or using any of the online tools for SSA benefits, sign up for an “My Social Security” account online. The process is pretty straightforward, you just need to provide a basic identification.

Retirement or spousal benefits

You must be at least 61 years old and 9 months old to receive these benefits. Another additional requirement – you should also want your benefits to start in no more than four months. Applying for retirement benefits essentially changes your financial status with the IRS and SSA, which can have financial consequences if you change your mind or make changes outside the permitted time frame. Disability benefits

You can easily apply for disability benefit online if you are:

  • 18 or older
  • not currently receiving benefits on your own Social Security journal
  • unable to work due to a medical condition that is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death;
  • have not been denied invalidity benefit within the last 60 days.

Supplementary security income

SSI is federal income funded by taxpayer dollars and helps people who have little or no income and who are 65 or older, blind, or disabled. Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program that is primarily used by people aged 65 or older and is used in retirement as health insurance. Certain people younger than 65 who have disabilities, and those with end-stage kidney disease, may also be eligible for Medicare. If you are nearly 65 years old, you should apply for Medicare benefits three months before you turn 65, SSA recommends. Help with the cost of prescription drugs

Those who just need a little extra help with the cost of their prescription drugs and daily medications can apply for it via the SSA benefits website here. You must be enrolled in a Medicare Prescription Drug program to receive this benefit.
