$600 for frontline workers |

Tom Vilsack, the Secretary of Agriculture, recently announced that a competitive grant worth $700 would be sent as a check payment. This would be part of the new Farm and Food Workers Relief grant program set up to help meat processing workers and farmers with safety costs and pandemic health concerns.

The announcement came in a press conference with Diana Tellefson Torres, executive director of the United Farm Workers Foundation, and Marc Perrone, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers International. To acknowledge the hardships they face and the costs borne by the frontline grocers, a $20 million budget has also been earmarked for another pilot program that would support grocer’s workers.

The new stimulus control program will be funded by the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 and will also be part of the USDA’s Build Back Better efforts to recover from and respond to the pandemic. The program aims to help farmers and meat processors with the costs incurred as a result of the pandemic.

This allowance will seek to cover the costs of necessary and reasonable staff, family or any living expenses related to the COVID pandemic, such as costs for personal protective equipment, care for dependents and the costs associated with establishing quarantines .

Minister Vilsack also said that while the country celebrated the economic and social achievements of the country’s workers during Labor Day, it should also be recognized that farm workers and meat processors have faced some serious, unprecedented challenges. Therefore, the stimulus grant program is just another part of the government’s efforts to provide aid that would alleviate the suffering of the pandemic.
