Amazon’s COVID-19 test facility in Hebron closes

A COVID-19 test facility built in Hebron during the pandemic to test Amazon employees will shut down laboratory operations in July and lay off 150 workers, according to a company letter sent to Kentucky officials

The facility, which was built in a warehouse near Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky International Airport, was one of two diagnostic test centers Amazon gathered at the height of the pandemic when outbreaks occurred among warehouse workers in several areas across the country. The decision to close the test center will not affect growing Amazon Air hub at CVG.

By February 11, 2021, the laboratory in Kentucky had tested more than 1 million Amazon employees for COVID-19, according to a press release.

But as cases have fallen after the rapid omicron rise earlier this year and rapid home tests – which were offered to all Americans by the federal government – have increased, the need for testing facilities like the one in Hebron has dropped significantly.
