For the first time ever, a sample of fresh US potato chips arrived in China and was exhibited at the Food & Hospitality China Shanghai Global Food Trade Show in early November. Helping to pave the way for commercial shipments of American French fries to China, this historic event was marked with ribbon cutting and speeches by US government officials and representatives of Potatoes USA.
Potatoes USA said in a press release that the presentation of American potatoes drew large crowds from the 127,454 visitors to the Food & Hospitality China Shanghai Global Food Trade Show. Among those who watched and admired the American potatoes were representatives of the four major chip manufacturers in China. They all expressed an interest in learning more about shredding potatoes in the US and testing them in their plants.
Potato chips from Idaho, Oregon and Washington were granted entry to China after 20 years of work as part of the Phase 1 US-China deal reached in January 2020. Since that time, Potatoes USA has been promoting in China.
According to Potatoes USA, there is great interest from Chinese processors in testing American potatoes; however, importing companies are still challenged by some of the requirements. The aim is that the importation of these samples from trade shows will provide an additional incentive for these companies to try to overcome these challenges.
The path the monsters traveled was certainly not an easy one; in fact, at many points along the way, it looked like the potatoes weren’t going to make it to the show. But in the end, the dedication and effort of Potatoes USA representatives in China, the US grower/shipper and many USDA officials in both the US and China finally made it possible.
