Omicron is the latest and possibly worst new strain of COVID-19.
Americans have been calling for another round of stimulus checks for some time now. Now, a new potentially deadly variant along with travel bans right before the holidays are pushing them even harder.
The World Health Organization identified Omicron as a variant of concern on Nov. 24. It comes from South Africa.

The country is seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases and it is likely that the new variant is causing this. The official name of the variant is B.1.1.529.
The first observation of the variant was from a sample tested on November 9.
President Joe Biden’s response was to impose additional restrictions on flying from South Africa and seven other countries.
The restrictions will begin on Nov. 29, and he said the decision was guided by science and his medical team.

Biden urged those who are not vaccinated to get the vaccine and those who are eligible for a booster to get it.
Governor Kathy Hochul also declared a state of emergency in New York just before the holidays.
In order to curb the spread of the Omicron variant, the implementing decree will come into effect on 3 December.
Hochul stated that it has not been detected, but is coming.
What about extra stimulation aid?

With past strains from COVID-19, the US has given citizens incentives to deal with the economic hardship caused by the pandemic.
Now Americans want help before the new variant reaches the US
There are no signs yet that President Biden plans to issue another stimulus check.
Despite this, some states give their residents that extra boost they need for the holidays.
Illinois Republican lawmakers recently proposed giving eligible residents checks worth $200.
California is currently sending out checks for the second wave of the Golden Stimulus II package.
