Beaumont warns that Metro Detroit is another COVID-19 ‘hotspot’

Beaumont Health has admitted 400 COVID-19 patients to its eight hospitals, and the medical system’s top epidemiologist said on Thursday that officials there are considering the fourth wave of the virus in Beaumont and warn it could take months.

dr. Nick Gilpin, Beaumont Health’s director of infection prevention and epidemiology, said transmission rates in the three-country region are about double what’s seen nationwide and that Metro Detroit is “becoming a hot spot again.”

Gilpin noted that the positivity rate, or the percentage of tests that came back positive, hit a very low point in the summer, but started rising in August — and has continued to rise since then.

“I have a feeling that we will probably live in this world for the next few months and possibly even winter,” he added during a briefing on Thursday morning. “Because I don’t see anything that will stop this in any meaningful way unless people radically change their behavior and start vaccinating and masking.

“This is going to be a tough one,” Gilpin said. “This one is going to be a bit more of a marathon than a sprint.”

Beaumont’s update on his COVID-19 admissions comes as Michigan hit its highest number of hospitalizations for the virus in six months on Wednesday. Projections suggest the rebound will not level off for at least six weeks.

Last year’s decline in COVID-19 cases was the peak so far during the pandemic, peaking from a year ago in November. Wednesday’s hospital admissions reached more than 2,600 people statewide who were sick with the virus — nearly identical to a year ago. Infections in Michigan have been on the rise for months.
