Jha said the focus instead in the Biden administration remains on vaccinations, boosters and the availability of treatments for Covid-19. To that end, he also called on Congress to take up a multi-billion dollar funding package when it returns from recess later this month.

“My hope is that they take up this issue right away and make sure we get funding for the American people so we can ensure that the treatment, the vaccines, the tests, everything remains available.”

Jha was also asked about the future return of requirements for indoor mask wearing like that reintroduced in Philadelphia. He said these decisions should be made at the local level.

“Some may choose to go this route, others will not,” he said. “I think this is exactly where these decisions need to be made.”

He also defended the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s decision to extend the federal travel mask mandate for at least 15 days amid a rise in Covid cases. The policy was to expire on April 18, but will remain in effect until May 3.

“They say 15 more days will give us a much better sense of whether these cases lead to serious illness, hospitalizations and death,” Jha said. “And I think 15 days is a pretty reasonable time to gather more data and make a more sustainable decision.”

Also on Sunday, Jha expressed confidence that the existing menu of vaccines remains effective against the highly contagious BA.2 subvariant, which has become the dominant virus strain throughout the United States.

“Our vaccines hold up well; especially if you’ve boosted, you’ll do fine, “Jha said on ABC’s” This Week with George Stephanopoulos. ”
