Boone Health and MU Health Care see decline in COVID-19 admissions | COVID-19

COLUMBIA – Both Boone Health and MU Health Care are experiencing a decline in COVID-19 admissions, according to Boone County hospital status dashboard.

On Monday, there were 77 COVID patients at Boone County hospitals. Of those, 12 were in the intensive care unit and six in respirators.

Dr. Robin Blount, chief physician at Boone Health, said this could be due to the omicron variant starting to disappear.

Dr. Blount said before Christmas that Boone Health saw a rapid increase in hospital admissions, including patients in the intensive care unit and in respirators.

“Things peaked a few weeks ago, and almost as fast as it came, we have seen a rapid decline in hospitalizations,” said Dr. Blount.

Boone Health has not seen much of a decline in COVID-19 inpatients since late October or early November, according to Dr. Blount.

Boone Health is not the only hospital in the area that has seen this drop in admissions, but a doctor at MU Health Care said she has also seen it in the last few weeks.

“Today we are about a third of what we were a few weeks ago,” said Dr. Laura Hesemann, MU Health Care Chief of Staff. “It’s a pretty significant drop for us.”

Dr. Blount said Boone Health has seen a number of employees out of COVID-19, which lasted a number of weeks, but that has also changed.

“Today, Boone Health has only had four employees out for COVID reasons, as it’s just everyday,” said Dr. Blount.

Dr. Blount stressed that the most important patients entering Boone Health are unvaccinated individuals.

“95% were unvaccinated people,” she said. “Yes, vaccinated people got COVID, but the cases were very mild and they rarely ended up in the hospital and certainly not in the intensive care unit.”

Both Dr. Blount and Dr. Hesemann said there have been significant improvements in COVID-19 hospital admissions in this area of the state and across the country, but there may well be another variant emerging.
