Car plows through Berwick crowd – NBC10 Philadelphia

More than a dozen people were injured on Saturday after a vehicle struck a crowd in Berwick, Pennsylvania, authorities said.

According to WBRE-TV, an affiliate of NBC, the crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. outside the Intoxicology Department restaurant, injuring several people when the driver crashed into a crowd along West 2nd Street.

Geisinger Medical Center, in nearby Danville, was receiving 13 patients by mid-evening, spokesman Natalie Buyny said by email. The circumstances of the injured were not available.

“From 8.30pm on Saturday, August 13, Geisinger will provide care to 13 patients from an incident in Berwick. Staff assess and assess patients for appropriate care,” Geisinger spokeswoman Natalie Buyny said in a statement.

In a Facebook post, Intoxicology Department, the restaurant where the fundraiser was held, said it would close its doors until further notice.

“Today was an absolute tragedy. We are closed until further notice. Please respect our privacy as we mourn and try to process the events that have occurred. Thank you,” the restaurant wrote.

Police said the car collided with the crowd as they attended an event benefiting victims of a house fire in Nescopeck, which killed seven adults and three children last week.

The dead in the house fire included seven adults and three children, ages 5, 6 and 7.

There is no word yet on the cause of the crash or the circumstances of the victims in Berwick.
