Washington [US]April 8 (ANI): The Chinese Embassy in the United States on Thursday reiterated Beijing’s opposition to the President of the US House, Nancy Pelosi, scheduled visit to Taiwan.
In a statement issued by the embassy, a Chinese spokesman called for Pelosi’s plan to visit Taiwan.
“In the last few days, Chinese Ambassador Qin Gang and the Chinese Embassy in the United States have made stern statements to the US Congress and Government about US President Nancy Pelosi’s reported visit to Taiwan, declaring China’s solemn stance and urging the US side to comply. “The China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiqués and cancel President Pelosi’s plan to visit Taiwan,” said a spokesman for the embassy.
These remarks were issued in response to media inquiries about the postponement of Pelosi’s upcoming trip to Asia – where she was to visit Taiwan, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
Pelosi was scheduled to arrive in Taiwan on Sunday, in a demonstration of support for Taipei amid concerns over relations across the strait following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The US House Speaker, who was scheduled to visit Taiwan, tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.
Pelosi, according to media reports, will now not travel.
“After being tested negative this week, speaker Pelosi received a positive test result for COVID-19 and is currently asymptomatic,” Pelosis’ spokesman said in a statement.
“The speaker is fully vaccinated and boosted and is grateful for the robust protection the vaccine has provided. The speaker will quarantine in accordance with the CDC guidelines and encourage everyone to be vaccinated, boosted and tested regularly,” the statement added. (ANI)
