Chinese embassy denounces meeting between US and Chinese Taiwanese officials

China has filed strong protests with the US after a meeting between US officials and “Taiwan’s representative to the US” Hsiao Bi-khim, the Chinese embassy in the US said on Wednesday.

The embassy’s statement came after a US State Department official tweeted about the meeting and after reports that the US side invited Hsu Yen-pu, the “army commander” of Taiwan, to visit the US.

China strongly opposes and condemns Washington’s move, an embassy spokesman said in the statement.

“We urge the US to give up the illusion of using Taiwan to contain China,” the spokesman said, stressing that China will oppose any statements or actions that violate the One China Principle or Questioning China’s core interests.

“The US should not fantasize about seeking China’s support and cooperation while willfully questioning China’s red line on the Taiwan issue. China will never accept it,” the spokesman added.

The spokesman added that, in the spirit of the recent telephone conversation between the heads of state of the two countries, the US must honor its commitments and create the conditions for China-US relations to get back on track of a healthy and stable development.
