Cities and States that Offer Universal Basic Income Payments up to $12,000

STIMULUS checks have given Americans a sense of universal basic income (UBI) — but people in certain states and cities are getting used to this idea.

UBI is a series of recurring payments that individuals receive from the government. These can be paid monthly, several times a year or just once a year.

The Yang idea of UBI is used in some states

The Yang idea of UBI is used in some states

This is one idea where entrepreneur Andrew Yang, who recently left the Democratic party, revolved his 2020 presidential campaign.

Then, during his campaign for mayor of New York City, Mr. Yang came up with the idea of paying half a million lower-income residents $2,000 a year.

And spoiler alert – he didn’t win.

During the height of the pandemic, multiple Covid-19 aid packages were passed around, including incentives for Americans at the federal level.

However, those were not carried out to come back.

Instead, they served the purpose of helping citizens in need to boost the economy by giving them more money to spend during a financial downturn.

While another stimulus package is unlikely to be passed at the federal level, some states are still providing UBI to their citizens. We list them below.

For some time now, Alaska has been giving its citizens checks under the Alaska Permanent Fund.

The fund, which has been in existence since 1982, was intended to provide citizens with a share of the state’s oil revenues.

The sovereign wealth fund pays annual dividends to eligible citizens.

To qualify, you must have been a resident of Alaska for at least one year — but you’re ineligible if you’ve been convicted of state crimes or jailed.

This year’s payment went to 643,000 Alaskans, totaling $1,114 per person.

The highest payout occurred in 2008 when the payout was $2,069.

Pittsburgh plans to use some of its Covid funds to provide assistance to 200 low-income households.

Specifically, those households will receive $500 per month in payments for two years.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto said the city will begin making payments later this year.

Assuming they get the full payments for the full 24 months, that would equal $12,000.

There is a similar program in Columbia, South Carolina for fathers in need.

Last month, 100 low-income dads in Columbia were given debit cards worth $500.

They will continue to receive those payments for another 11 months.

The Windy City will also offer a UBI program to low-income households.

Eligible families who earn less than $35,000 each year will receive $500 in monthly payments.

The payment will affect 5,000 Chicago families and will be paid in part with funds from the American Rescue Act, signed by President Joe Biden in March.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles also recently announced a UBI plan for low-income workers.

A total of 3,200 families will receive $1,000 in monthly installments for a year.

Eligible families have an income that is at or below the federal poverty line ($26,200 for a family of four).

It’s also worth including the California stimulus package.

The California Franchise Tax Board expects to make approximately nine million payments under the Golden State Stimulus II.

Yet another 4.5 million Californians owe up to $1,100 in checks.

However, it is unclear whether these will continue after the second round of inspections.
