Covid-19 cases is rising in the US – and could get even worse in the coming months, federal health officials say warned Wednesday.

Right now, about a third of the U.S. population lives in areas considered to be at higher risk – mostly in the Northeast and Midwest.

“Previous increases in infections, in different waves of infection, have shown that this travels across the country,” said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, CDC Director, at a White House briefing with journalists.

Officials, however, are wary of making concrete predictions and say how much worse the pandemic will be will depend on several factors, including the extent to which previous infections will protect against new variants.
