Concerns are rising in Chicago over the emergence of the COVID-19 subvariant that is causing coincidence in Europe

Chicago‘s top doctor said she’s watching closely COVID-19 trends in Western Europe, where at least a dozen countries now report an increase just days after lifting restrictions.

The spike is driven by a sub-variant of the omicron strain, called BA.2, and it spreads rapidly around the world.

China, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea are all experiencing a large increase in cases, resulting in new shutdowns.

“What’s important is that many of these countries, while experiencing increases in cases, do not turn into that kind of serious disease, the hospitalizations, because they are highly vaccinated,” said Dr. Allison Arwady, Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner. “My concern is that we are not as highly vaccinated as many of the other countries.”

Just under 68% off Illinois‘population is fully vaccinated.
