COVID-19 Funeral Assistance: How Families of Victims Can Get Federal Assistance from FEMA

The federal government has provided more than $ 2 billion to help cover the funeral costs of more than 300,000 families of people who died of COVID-19, but more families are eligible, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said in the announcement of a new campaign to raise awareness of help.

That COVID-19 Funeral Program provides up to $ 9,000 per funeral and covers coronavirus-related deaths since January 20, 2020. The average amount awarded, according to FEMA, has been $ 6,500.

More than 965,000 people have died in the United States from the virus.

Deanne Criswell, FEMA’s administrator, said a new advertising campaign is targeting California, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas – areas with high rates of COVID deaths but lower rates for funeral assistance reimbursement.

To be eligible for reimbursement, death certificates for those who have died after 16 May 2020 must state that the death has been attributed to COVID. For deaths in the first months of the pandemic – from 20 January 2020 to 16 May 2020 – death certificates must be accompanied by a signed declaration from a doctor, forensic pathologist or the certifying officer listed on the certificate stating that coronavirus was the cause or a contributing cause of death.

Expenditures covered by the FEMA program include funeral services, cremation and burial, as well as costs for coffins or urns, burial sites or cremation niches, markers or tombstones, transportation or transfer of remains, priests or civil servants, and use of funeral and staff equipment.

FEMA does not accept online applications for the reimbursement program. Eligible persons should call the Agency’s toll-free helpline at (844) 684-6333.
