Did Pfizer’s CEO say a fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine was needed?

With new COVID-19 variants being discovered by scientists, many on social media are beginning to wonder if the current protection offered by the COVID-19 vaccine is enough, or if new guidance from health officials is on the horizon.

For example, this tweet from RapTV claims that the CEO of Pfizer said a fourth dose of their COVID-19 vaccine would be “necessary.” That is it. The tweet offered no sources or any additional information, such as when this would start or who it would apply to.

Did Pfizer’s CEO really advise people to be doubly boosted? Here’s how we fact checked it.

Who is behind the claim?

When it comes to health information, one always wants to take a closer look at who is behind the information. Knowing where the information is coming from can warn you of any bias or let you know if they are experts in what they are posting about.

This tweet was posted by RapTV, a verified account that focuses primarily on entertainment news and music updates – not an expert source when it comes to COVID-19 security measures, pandemic updates, or health news in general.

And a quick note about the blue tick: That means Twitter recognizes that account as authentic. This is a good thing to keep an eye on, as there are several parody accounts on Twitter with profile pictures and handles that at a quick glance look exactly like RapTV’s.

Trace the original source

A keyword search on “pfizer ceo fourth dose” brought tons of reporting from more recognizable sources.

According to this article from CBS News, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said in an interview on “Face the Nation” that a fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine would be “necessary” based on early and preliminary data. According to their reporting, while the current Pfizer vaccine still protects against serious illness, the second booster is “necessary to ward off infections.”

Check out more sources

Searching for more information makes it clear that experts still have not agreed on the need for a fourth dose.

ABC News e.g. interviewed professors from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Alabama in Birmingham in March 2022as both said at the time that it was either too early to recommend a fourth dose, or that very few people – apart from people who are immunocompromised – would require one.

And while people aged 50 and over are now eligible to get their second COVID-19 booster shot, USA Today reported that science does not offer much guidance hereso the decision to get double boost at this point should be personal.

Things can certainly change as scientists and experts learn more. You should always consult your own doctor and rely on reliable primary sources such as US Food and Drug Administration or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Evaluation

Legit. While the tweet could have included more information or links to the guidance of scientists or health officials, Pfizer’s CEO said a fourth vaccine would be “needed.” So we consider this claim to be legal.
