Beijing [China]April 21 (ANI): The United States should not underestimate China’s determination and capability, Chinese Prime Minister and Secretary of Defense Wei Fenghe said Wednesday during a phone call with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
In the telephone conversation, the two ministers also exchanged views on topics such as maritime and air safety and the situation in Ukraine. Wei said China and the United States should seriously implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
China hopes to establish healthy and stable relations with the major countries with the United States, Wei said, adding that in the meantime, China will defend its national interests and dignity.
Wei also warned the United States not to underestimate China’s determination and capacity.
The two militaries should strengthen mutual trust, strengthen dialogue and exchanges, manage risks and crises and implement practical cooperation to ensure the normal and stable development of bilateral military-to-military relations, he said.
If the Taiwan issue is not properly addressed, it will have a subversive effect on relations between China and the United States, Wei stressed, adding that the Chinese military will resolutely ensure national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.
According to Xinhua, Austin said the United States will strengthen military exchanges and cooperation with China in an honest and open manner. He said the two sides should handle competition and risks responsibly and deal with the difficulties the two militaries are facing properly.
On Twitter, Austin wrote: “We discussed defense relations between the United States and China, regional security issues and Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.”
The call was a follow-up to the video conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden on March 18.
U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said Monday that the United States will continue to closely monitor the level of support China can show to Russia with respect to Ukraine.
“We will continue to keep a close eye, a close eye on the level of support China (People’s Republic of China) shows towards Russia,” Price said during a press briefing.
Price added that there will be strong consequences for China if it supplies weapons or supplies to Russia for its operation in Ukraine, or if it helps Moscow avoid Western sanctions. (ANI)
