Former President Donald Trump went after Senator Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., via social media for expressing skepticism about Republicans’ chances of retaking congressional majorities in November’s midterm elections.
In a message to Truth Social, Trump called the Senate minority leader a “broken political hack” and challenged his party loyalty.
“Why are Republican senators allowing a broken hack politician, Mitch McConnell, to openly discredit hard-working Republican candidates for the US Senate,” Trump asked.

He added: “This is such an insult to honor and leadership. He should spend more time (and money!) helping them get elected, and less time helping his crazy wife and family get rich. to be on China!”

The comment comes as McConnell suggested Thursday that he didn’t think Republicans would retake the Senate because “candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome.” He said his party might do better to win back the US House.
“I think the House is more likely to overturn than the Senate,” the minority leader told the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. “Senate races are just different, they’re all over the state. The quality of the candidates has a lot to do with the outcome.”
“Right now we have a 50-50 Senate and a 50-50 country, but I think when all is said and done this fall, we will probably have an extremely tight-knit Senate. Either our side up a little or their side up a bit. little bit,” he added.
The comment was widely criticized by conservatives, including Fox News host Sean Hannity.
“Democrats are portraying Republican Senate candidates in the upcoming elections and midterm elections as cruel and aloof,” Hannity said on his Friday show. “Well, apparently Senate Leader Mitch McConnell is content to let them dry out and fend for themselves.”

“Listen to these comments, they are very encouraging,” he added, before playing a snippet of McConnell’s comments.
Hannity continued, “How about going out, Mitch, and fighting for your team? What’s your agenda, Mitch, or would you rather just watch helplessly as the Democrats lie to you in the face, another $500 billion green energy?”

The Fox News host concluded, “His term as leader must come to an end.”
McConnell’s shaky optimism comes when Republican Senators Blake Masters of Arizona, Herschel Walker of Georgia and Mehemt Oz of Pennsylvania fall behind in their respective races. sen. Ron Johnson, R-WI, is also behind in his reelection bid.
