Empty promises US and China on climate still mark progress

Look at the text of the joint statement issued from Glasgow, and you will see a lot of dignified pabulum and few concrete actions. Neither country has joined the conference’s commitments on coal power or electric vehicles, and China has not endorsed plans to end foreign financing of fossil fuels, reduce methane emissions or make agriculture more sustainable. not to mention the joint proposals on clean energy, green steel, or road transport. Vague promises to take action on methane and “phasing out” (but not phasing out) coal use by the late 2020s are the closest thing to solid commitments.
