Ezike: Mask mandate likely to last through Thanksgiving as Illinois COVID-19 hospital admissions rise

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (WTVO) – Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, says a spike in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations is working against Governor JB Pritkzer’s hopes to lift the mandate for indoor masks ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

According to WGEM, Ezike said it would be inappropriate to consider removing the indoor mask mandate as hospital admissions increase.

“Since we moved in, we may not have brought our masks in. So a lot of unmasked indoor gatherings are probably part of the problem,” Ezike said. “Of course, COVID is so complicated. It’s thrown us curveball after curveball.”

On Monday, the IDPH reported 2,060 new cases, with 1,300 people hospitalized with coronavirus complications statewide.

Illinois has an average of 25 deaths per day from COVID-19.

We want to do everything we can to (continue to) vaccinate, get a boost, wear our masks, you know, encourage other people to get vaccinated. All of that will help reduce these awful statistics that we report and view every day,” Ezike said.
