Fauci says boosters for all keys to reaching US COVID-19 endemic level

Nov. 16 (Reuters) – Top US infectious disease official Dr. Anthony Fauci, said Tuesday it is possible that COVID-19 could be reduced to an endemic disease of the current major health crisis next year if the country increases vaccination rates.

Booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccines are vital to getting to that point, Fauci said in an interview at the Reuters Total Health conference, which takes place virtually Nov. 15-18. [https://reutersevents.com/events/healthcare/]

“If you want to become endemic, you have to get the infection level so low that it has no impact on society, on your life, on your economy,” Fauci said. “People will still get infected. People could still be hospitalized, but the level would be so low that we don’t think about it all the time and it doesn’t affect what we do.”

Getting there, he said, would require a lot more people to get vaccinated and get boosters.

If the United States makes boosters available to everyone, it’s possible the country could get the virus under control by spring 2022, Fauci added.

“Look at what other countries are doing now about putting in place a booster campaign for just about everyone. I think if we do that, and we do it seriously, we can have this pretty well under control by spring,” Fauci said.
