FIFA 23 is currently available for pre-order worldwide, and would be a full-price retail release, but in a particular market in a particular store, customers could get a great bargain.

Last month, anyone browsing the Epic Games Store in India would have noticed that while the standard edition of FIFA 23 cost 3,499 (USD$44), the Ultimate Edition – which should have been ₹4,799 (USD$60) instead. was listed for ₹4.80.

That’s not a sale price, that’s a mistake, one where the store clearly put the comma in the wrong place. ₹4.80 turns out to be six cents, and as the news of the savings spread, users flocked to the store and bought the game. And not just Indian gamers; as soon as the news got out, fans via social media shared ways for players outside the region to set up their accounts on the Indian Epic Games Store so they could get on the bug as well.

This sort of thing isn’t exactly rare in online shopping, but often times stores will cancel orders when the discrepancy is this big, so I don’t think too many people would have expected to actually get the the more expensive version of FIFA 23 for six cents.

But they have! Through PC gamerEA Sports released a statement this week stating:

A few weeks ago, we scored a pretty spectacular own goal when we accidentally pre-purchased FIFA 23 on the Epic Games Store at an incorrect price. It was our mistake and we wanted to let you know that we honor all pre-purchases made at that price.

That’s nice for anyone who managed to score the savings, but let’s be real: EA isn’t really missing much here. While FIFA has always been a full-price sports game and still is with single player modes, in recent years the franchise’s Ultimate Team multiplayer mode has given the company billionsso I’m sure the calculation of “Money Lost on First Six Cent Sales” versus “Money Made Long-Term Through Ultimate Team” still worked out in favor of the company.
