Florida sees an increase in people wanting COVID-19 booster shots

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Department of Health in Orange County said they have seen an increase in recent weeks when it comes to people seeking COVID-19 booster injections.

Information officer Kent Donahue said the third dose every day for the past two weeks has been the majority of the vaccination doses they provided.

Donahue said Monday they had more than 2,400 third doses in Orange County. Last Friday, the province saw more than 4,400 third doses.

The health department is hosting free vaccination events throughout the week, and in addition to offering the three vaccines at their sites, Donahue said they will also provide the flu shot.

“Our concern this year is that last year there was such a small number of flu cases in the community that you don’t have that built up immunity to fight this year’s flu,” Donahue said.

In terms of COVID cases, numbers for the past three weeks have been rising every week in Orange County, according to state reports. Orange County stood at 680 cases in mid-November, and last Friday’s report had 905 cases in the county.
