Fourth stimulus check: $ 600 checks proposed for millions of Californians, but for the rest of the United States, it’s up to Congress

A fourth stimulus check may be on the horizon for Californians, though Congress and the Biden administration have not progressed progressive proposals to issue monthly $ 2,000 checks nationwide for the duration of COVID-19 pandemic.

California Governor Gavin Newsom hopes to deliver $ 600 checks – and an additional $ 500 to families with relatives – to about 11 million people, earning between $ 30,000 and $ 75,000 annually, USA today reported.

How can California issue checks? It has a budget surplus of nearly $ 76 billion, the “largest government surplus in U.S. history,” Newsom said recently. California law calls on the state to give some of any profits back to taxpayers if it reaches a certain threshold; Officials estimate California will be about $ 16 billion across the border, forcing state leaders to find ways to get the money back into residents’ pockets, USA Today reported. Some critics have instead called for tax cuts, arguing that Newsom uses the stimulus as a way to dull the recall effort against him.

At national level, another 1 million COVID-19 stimulus checks landed on U.S. bank accounts this week, bringing the third round of direct aid to a total of $ 388 billion since the president Joe Biden signed the US $ 1.9 trillion rescue plan in March.

In all, the Internal Revenue Service issued $ 165 million in direct payments of $ 1,400 in the third round. Former President Donald Trump signed COVID-19 aid packages that included $ 1,200 and $ 600 payments in March 2020 and December 2020, respectively.

Nearly 2.2 million people have signed one Change.org petition urging the FBI to send Americans monthly checks of $ 2,000 – including $ 1,000 payments to children – for the duration of the pandemic.

Posted more than a year ago by Stephanie Bonin, who owns a restaurant with her husband, the petition’s proposal is in line with a bill introduced by Sens. Ed Markey and Bernie Sanders along with then Sen. Kamala Harris, in May 2020, after the pandemic shut down companies and triggered unprecedented job losses nationwide.

Nearly two dozen Democratic senators and 50 lawmakers have called on Biden to include recurring controls in future economic plans. Biden has called for more payments to parents, but not a fourth round of stimulus checks or recurring payments.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki alluded to stimulus check funding without mentioning figures during a recent news briefing.

“We will see what members of Congress are proposing, but they are not free,” Psaki said when asked if the administration would support fourth stimulus payments.

She noted that the U.S. rescue plan included a historic temporary expansion of Child tax deduction, which will see monthly payments sent to parents starting July. Parents will receive $ 3,000 per child ages 6 to 17 and $ 3,600 for each child under 6. Democratic leaders and the Massachusetts delegation have called for the expansion to remain permanent, while a new proposal from Biden will extend it to 2025.
