Fourth stimulus check: $600 checks proposed for millions of Californians, but for the rest of the US it’s up to Congress

A fourth stimulus check could be on the horizon for Californians even if Congress and the Biden administration fail to make progress on progressives’ proposals to issue monthly checks of $2,000 nationwide for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

California Governor Gavin Newsom hopes to deliver checks for $600 — and an additional $500 for families with dependents — to about 11 million residents who earn between $30,000 and $75,000 annually, USA Today reported.

How can California issue checks? It has a budget surplus of nearly $76 billion, the “largest government surplus in US history,” Newsom said recently. California law calls on the state to return a portion of any surplus to taxpayers if it reaches a certain threshold; officials estimate California will be about $16 billion over the limit, forcing state leaders to find ways to get the money back into residents’ pockets, USA Today reported. Some critics have instead called for tax cuts, claiming that Newsom is using the stimulus as a way to smooth the recall against him.

Nationwide, an additional 1 million COVID-19 stimulus checks hit Americans’ bank accounts this week, bringing the third round of direct aid to a total of $388 billion since President Joe Biden signed the $1.9 trillion US bailout in March. .

All told, the Internal Revenue Service issued 165 million direct payments of $1,400 in the third round. Former President Donald Trump signed COVID-19 relief packages in March 2020 and December 2020 with payments of $1,200 and $600, respectively.

Nearly 2.2 million people have signed a petition calling on the FBI to send Americans monthly checks for $2,000 — including $1,000 in payments for children — for the duration of the pandemic.

Posted more than a year ago by Stephanie Bonin, who owns a restaurant with her husband, the petition’s proposal aligns with a bill introduced by Sens. Ed Markey and Bernie Sanders, along with then-Sen. Kamala Harris, in May 2020, after the pandemic shut businesses and caused unprecedented job losses across the country.

Nearly two dozen Democratic senators and 50 members of the House have called on Biden to include recurring controls in future economic plans. Biden has called for more payments to parents, but not a fourth round of stimulus checks or recurring payments.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki hinted at the financing of stimulus measures without citing numbers at a recent press conference.

“We’ll see what members of Congress propose, but they are not free,” Psaki said when he urged the government to support the fourth stimulus payments.

She noted that the US bailout plan included a historic temporary extension of the child tax credit, sending monthly payments to parents from July. Parents will receive $3,000 per child ages 6 to 17 and $3,600 for each child under 6. Democratic leaders and the Massachusetts delegation have called for the extension to be kept permanent, while a new proposal from Biden would extend it until 2025.
