Brown hits back at criticism of Graham’s Child Tax Credit
Last week, South Carolina Senator Lindsay Graham lashed out at the child tax credit, claim it caused illegal immigration – the thought that that word will go to other countries that if people can come to the US they will get free money for their children.
Of course that’s not what happens because unauthorized immigrant children are not eligible for the child tax credit. (There’s another argument about what really drives people to immigrate, but generally it’s not for benefits and the vast majority of immigrants work incredibly hard to build a new prosperous life in their new country – research shows indicate that immigrants as a whole have a major positive benefit to the economy).
Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown spoke to Insider about Graham’s comments, saying, “It’s a new argument just so they can give tax cuts to the rich and pressure working families. I’ve just never heard anything so stupid.”
Research shows that not only the first month of payments in July Keep 3 million children out of poverty and help feed 2 million children, analysis shows that the payments also had “very small” impacts on employment, indicating that the tax credit does not encourage parents not to return to work.
