The companies warned in the statement were Mercury Insurance Co., Allstate Northbrook Indemnity Co. and CSAA Insurance Exchange.

Those insurers cover 20 percent of California drivers.

The Sun contacted Mercury Insurance Co., Allstate Northbrook Indemnity Co. and CSAA Insurance Exchange for comment.

Mercury stated in response, “We have received Commissioner Lara’s letter, are currently reviewing the request and will respond within the requested time frame.”

It also added that it has issued more than $137 million in refunds to policyholders.

According to the statement, Lara’s actions have now resulted in “$2.4 billion driver premium waiver.”
