Future COVID-19 variants: Will new COVID mutants evade vaccines?

Future coronavirus variants may evade COVID-19 vaccines, a health expert at Duke University recently warned.

The news: David Montefioritold a viral expert at Duke University WRAL that the current COVID-19 vaccines work well against the current COVID-19 variants.

  • But a new mutation could mean doom for the vaccines, he said.

What he said: “We see that these new forms achieve increased transferability and outcompete the previous form,” he said. “We will continue to have omicron lines that will evolve and hopefully not be able to avoid the vaccines.”

  • Montefiori told WRAL immunity will diminish and different varieties will become dominant. There is a chance that our immunity will drop when a stronger variant comes along.
  • That is why, he said, the vaccines need to be updated regularly.

But: That Duke health expert said that viruses often become less severe over time. And coronavirus is not good at avoiding vaccines like the flu.

  • “I think this virus will always be with us,” Montefiori said. “I think it’s going to be something we have to live with.”

In the meantime Dr. Anthony Faucitold the White House Pandemic Chief BuzzFeed News that we should expect to see variants in the future.

  • “It’s really hard to say what’s going to happen,” Fauci said BuzzFeed News. “But there are new varieties coming.”
  • He told BuzzFeed News that new COVID variants will appear in places where “one has large pockets of unvaccinated people that give the virus room to develop.”
