Giants-Patriots, Preseason Week 1: Live Updates If Giants Win

Giants win!

A 24-yard Graham Gano field goal as time went on gave the New York Giant a 23-21 preseason win over the New England Patriots on Thursday night.

ANOTHER INJURY: Rookie cornerback Cor’Dale Flott has been ruled out with a groin injury.

JAMIL DOUGLAS Injury: The Giants have now lost offensive linemen Shane Lemieux and Jamil Douglas in their preseason opener.

TOUCHDOWN! Giants take a 17-14 lead in the third quarter.

Peace: The Giants went into halftime with a 10-7 lead. In relief from Daniel Jones, Tyrod Taylor went 13 of 21 for 129 yards and a 7-yard touchdown pass to Richie James.

First quarter: The Giant Path, 7-3. Daniel Jones is 6 of 10 for 69 yards. Saquon Barkley has four carries for 13 yards and a reception for six yards.

Shane Lemieux (TOE) will not return. On the broadcast, we are told that the Giants had hoped to let Lemieux play in the center later.

It doesn’t sound like Shane Lemieux has a terrible injury. But you don’t want injuries in a game like this.

Pre-game updates

Rookies Darrian Beavers and DJ Davidson get to work.

The New York Giants open their preseason Thursday night (7:00 PM ET/NFL Network and NBC-4), marking Brian Daboll’s sideline debut as the team’s head coach.

see old friends

Daboll’s debut comes against Bill Belichick, a mentor and former employer, and friend, and for Giants head coach Joe Judge, who was replaced by Daboll. He doesn’t get sentimental.

“I haven’t thought about it yet. I am so focused on doing things right every day. It is clear that he [Belichick is] a mentor of mine, but I haven’t sat there and thought, ‘Oh, this is the first game,’ said Daboll. “I know my wife and kids will try to get out. But he coached some, 750 games? This is the first game of the season for me. I’m just trying to do good for my team. I’m not really worried about me.”

The fact that Judge is on the other side as New England’s quarterbacks coach and offensive assistant might be a little inconvenient for some of the guys on the roster who played for him for the past two years. Again, it’s not something Daboll is into.

‘I didn’t even mention it. You’ve been in this league long enough where I’ve coached against friends, players, trainers. It’s kind of like getting used to it, you know?’ said Daboll. “Because I’ve been in the league for as long as I am, I know 10 other guys on this staff, I’ve worked with four of them, or I was in this place last year and I’m going to this place. It’s just a little bit the nature of the NFL.”

Starters vs Backups

Daboll has said that all Giants healthy starters will play.

“I think that’s important to play football: to have live representatives. I can’t tell you now how many reps that will be,” Daboll said. “I think it will be less for some and more for others, and every game will have a plan. I expect all our guys to play on Thursday.”

That won’t be the case for the Patriots, who aren’t expected to play starters.
