(GLASGOW — November 11, 2021) The United States and China announced the US-China Joint Glasgow in Glasgow yesterday Statement on improving climate action in the 2020s.
“This statement is a hopeful sign that the two countries that emit the most greenhouse gases will continue to work together to tackle climate change. While the details are brief, the announcement is important as the United States and China must tackle the climate crisis together and with other major emitters.
“It is noteworthy that short-term action, in particular to reduce methane emissions, is explicitly on the agenda of this important bilateral relationship and is becoming more concrete. Tackling methane now is the most immediate step any country can take in our lifetime to slow down global warming. As the IPCC’s recent scientific report states, it is critical to reduce methane, along with aggressive efforts to decarbonise our economies.”
