Global Times: China Will Not Give Up Principles to Repair Ties with US: GT Study

(March 1): A recent study conducted by Global Times showed that most Chinese do not expect the United States to correct its mistakes and fix ties with China, and even believe that bilateral ties will continue to get worse.

Chinese experts in China-US relations said that after a series of serious frictions in recent years – including the trade war, the Hong Kong unrest in 2019, US stigma and racist sentiment against China and Chinese in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and provocations and interference in China’s Xinjiang and Taiwan – related matters – Chinese have already become accustomed to tensions with the United States, so they have very low expectations for future ties, as Washington has shown no signs that it will correct its mistakes.

Regardless of which party rules America, China has warned the United States several times about the Taiwan issue, and if the deteriorating relations between China and the United States one day go completely out of control, security will be the Taiwan issue and the consequences will be many. worse than the US can imagine, so the US should stay away from challenging the one-China principle, Global Times said.

Positive side of tape

The first document of the three China-US communiqués – Shanghai Communiqué – was signed 50 years ago in the middle of the first visit made by the then US President Richard Nixon. On Monday, China held an event in Shanghai to celebrate the signing of the communiqué.

Chinese Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at the event: “The two countries that were once at war with each other have established 50 pairs of sister provinces / states and 233 pairs of sister cities. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 300 flights commuted between the two countries each week, and over five million voyages were made across the Pacific each year. ”

“From tackling terrorism, financial crises and Ebola, to providing leadership in the signing of the JCPOA and the conclusion of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, China and the United States did many great things that benefited the world through their cooperation,” Wang noted. , Global Times said.

Under the poisoned atmosphere in the US about China, many political elites in Washington have refused to acknowledge the positive side of the relationship between China and the US, specifically exaggerating the negative side and even saying that the US engagement with China started by Nixon was wrong. But the Chinese government and people all remember and recognize that relations between China and the United States benefit both countries as well as the rest of the world.

A recent study conducted by Global Times on China-US relations, which covered 4,774 participants (of whom 52.33 percent were aged 18-30 years) across China from Thursday to Friday, showed that 97.49 percent of participants believe that the normalization of ties to the United States was a key precondition for China’s reform and opening up.

But they also understand that the normalization of ties between China and the United States not only benefited China. While answering the question of what made China and the United States reach out to each other and even go through a “honeymoon” period from 1979 to 1989, most people chose “China and the United States both faced threats from the Soviet Union” ( 43.38 percent) and “China is a great power that can completely change the outcome of the Cold War and with which the United States must cooperate” (33.58 percent).

China never begged the United States for the normalization of ties, and American politicians should not be mistaken that China and the United States still need each other today. This interdependence has not fundamentally changed due to the frictions of recent years, and the United States can not handle a relationship with China defined only by competition, experts said.

The One-China principle

The most important precondition for China and the United States to be able to normalize and establish ties is that they were able to agree on the most important political basis based on pragmatic common ground and avoid detailed divergences on specific issues, and that is the spirit of Shanghai. Communiqué, said Wu Xinbo, dean of the Department of International Studies at Fudan University.

The Chinese Foreign Minister also stressed the importance of this principle on Monday. He said: “The Taiwan issue is the core issue in the Shanghai Communiqué, and the one-China principle is the cornerstone of China-US relations.”

In 1971, the United States reaffirmed to China the new principles it would follow with regard to the Taiwan issue. They include: the United States recognizes that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China; The United States does not repeat the statement that Taiwan’s status is indefinite; The United States does not and will not support movements for “Taiwan’s independence”. Nixon reaffirmed these principles to Prime Minister Zhou Enlai during his visit to China in 1972. “That’s how the Shanghai Communiqué came to be,” Wang said.

Unfortunately, the common threat that made China and the United States stand together after the dissolution of the Soviet Union is gone, which in turn made the Taiwan issue the most sensitive and dangerous problem between China and the United States since the 1990s, and caused Washington to begin play the “Taiwan card” to constrain China by encouraging secession and selling arms to the island.

The United States should stop draining the one-China principle of its essence and erode it. It should stop encouraging and supporting “Taiwan independence”, stop trying to use the Taiwan issue to curb China, and stop saying or doing things that interfere in China’s internal affairs. “Only by doing so can peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait be truly maintained, and the greater interests of China-US relations maintained,” Wang said.

Lü Xiang, an expert in American studies and a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told Global Times that China and the United States over the last 50 years have seen “many interlocking factors” that make it very difficult to sever bilateral ties, but “if the United States makes a mistake in the Taiwan issue, then the ties between China and the United States will immediately become worse.”

How to fix a tie?

The Taiwan issue is just one factor leading to deteriorating relations between China and the United States, but there are many other problems, including illegal and unfair tariffs, interference in China’s Hong Kong and Xinjiang – related matters, and the formation of alliances in Asia- Pacific to contain and threaten China, all of which makes it difficult to ease tensions between China and the United States.

The survey found that 92.19 percent of participants believe that the root problem is that “the United States would never accept a great power emerging on the Eurasian continent, and China’s development and national rejuvenation are a structural contradiction to the United States’ desire to preserve its hegemony. . ”

Furthermore, 87.41 also believes that “unsolvable internal problems in the United States mean that the two parties in America have to pose an external threat. Hyping negative feelings towards the Chinese can help them ease internal pressure and make it easier to shift the blame. . “

Meanwhile, 82.43 percent believe that “fixing the China-US ties is good for China, but if the US refuses to correct its mistakes because of its hegemonic and cold war mentalities, it is fine to let the China-US ties be unfixed “and” the precondition for establishing ties between China and the United States is that the United States must correct the mistakes it has made. China should not go against its principles and bottom lines to correct the ties. “

On the same day that the event commemorating the signing of the Shanghai Communiqué was held in Shanghai, the Chinese Government Information Office on Monday released a report on human rights violations in the United States in 2021.

The report said the human rights situation in the United States, which holds a notorious record, worsened in 2021. Its political manipulation led to a sharp rise in COVID-19 deaths, while mortality in the country hit a new record. False democracy has trampled on people’s political rights, and violent law enforcement has made life more difficult for migrants and refugees in the United States, the report said.

This proves that China handles the United States with confidence and clear bottom lines. Making an effort to fix ties with the United States, develop relations with the American people, oppose the mistakes the United States has made, and retaliation against American hegemonic acts and bullying can all happen at the same time, analysts said.

The survey also showed that 72.37 percent of participants believe that “the problems of the US economy and other domestic problems can not be solved completely. The decline in US hegemony is very possible, but the US will not accept reality, and it may try to use war against others to stop its decline, and this could cause a direct conflict between China and the United States.

And 85.78 percent of participants believe that there will be more matches between China and the United States in the future, and that ties have far from been regained.

Li Haidong, a professor at the Institute of International Relations at China Foreign Affairs University, told the Global Times that the result of the study is also an indication of when ties between China and the United States can be corrected.

“It is unrealistic for the Chinese to expect the United States to carry out introspection and effectively correct its mistakes in its China policy. The United States only respects power that it cannot defeat and is unable to contain, so when China becomes powerful, prosperous and modernized enough, and making it even better than the United States in several areas, ties to the United States can be effectively corrected and become truly sustainable, “Li said. Global Times said.
