Truck drivers are not recognized as an organized workforce, Judge Arun Mishra said

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) President (Retd.) Justice Arun Mishra on Tuesday expressed concern over the situation of commercial truck drivers and called on the government to do more for their social security.

During a meeting of the NHRC’s core group on business and human rights, Judge Mishra said truck drivers were not recognized as an organized workforce.

According to the NHRC statement, he said “although the efforts of the center and the state are appreciated, more efforts need to be made focusing on providing social security, reducing substance abuse, creating awareness of responsible sexual behavior, standardizing pay and delivering regular breaks. . “

Judge Mishra said that given that 5% of India’s GDP came from the transport sector and thus the truck drivers contributed to the economy, an integrated approach to their interests and health was required. He asked participants to submit their suggestions to make recommendations to improve the number of truck drivers.

The NHRC said some aspects that emerged during the experts’ discussion were the need for compulsory health and accident insurance, the establishment of truck stops and rest areas with facilities on all national highways and motorways, the provision of a formal remuneration structure, the installation of complaint registration guides over corruption and for mental health support, etc.
