Healthier plant-based diets lower the risk of COVID-19 disease

Dr. Jason Newsom

Nearly two years into the pandemic, Alabama has the lowest percentage of fully vaccinated adults in the country, only 50%. More than 18,000 Alabamers have died from COVID-19. Another surprising Alabama statistic: We are the third overweight state in the country. How are these two statistics related, and why does it matter?

If you have poor health when you get COVID-19, you are more likely to get sicker, be hospitalized, and have poorer outcomes than others who maintain a healthy weight and good blood pressure and good cholesterol. 39 percent of Alabama adults are overweight, a significant risk factor leading to mechanical ventilation and death in those with COVID-19.

Those who are infected with COVID-19 and who also live with chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes have the greatest risk of serious illness. Just a few weeks ago, the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a commentary arguing that a plant-based diet may lower a person’s risk of COVID-19-related serious illness or death.
