How to get to a pedestrian crossing near you
Q. How do we get the California Department of Transportation to place a pedestrian crossing across Pine Street at Gold Street in Redding? That area is very dangerous as vehicles drive up the hill.
ONE. To begin the process of requesting a pedestrian crossing at the site, contact Caltrans, which maintains the street, said Chris Woodward, a spokesman for the agency. The main line is (530) 225-3426. Or you can send an e-mail to the public information office, [email protected]including the location and the reasons why you think a pedestrian crossing is justified, he said.
Thereafter, the Agency’s traffic service staff will examine the location before deciding whether to add a pedestrian crossing or other traffic control device.
Among the factors that Caltrans will take into account: the speed limit, the use of pedestrians and the visibility.
“Is it at the top of a hill where you come across the hill and there is a pedestrian crossing right there? There has to be a good sighting distance so motorists can see the area and all the people crossing there,” Woodward said.

Another factor is the location of any nearby transitions. Decisions are made place by place, he said.
Residents should be aware that pedestrian crossings are not a cure, Woodward said. Investigations of pedestrian-vehicle incidents at pedestrian crossings suggest that areas marked with pedestrian crossings may have more accidents than unmarked intersections.
One theory for this, he said, is that pedestrian markings give pedestrians a false sense of security – that being within the lines will prevent anything from happening.
“You might be able to take a bigger chance by saying, ‘well, traffic comes through pretty quickly, but they stop for me because I’m at the pedestrian crossing.’

Anyone wishing to have a pedestrian crossing installed on a road maintained by Shasta County should call the Department of Public Works at (530) 225-5661, said John Heath, the county’s supervising engineer. People can also get in touch with the department with one Request for pedestrian crossing completed online.
County officials considering whether to add a pedestrian crossing in the middle of the block will look at how many people typically cross the street and traffic. Still, Heath said, “We do not see a high pedestrian demand in Shasta County because most of the county is rural. There are not even many sidewalks in the county.”
While the law requires vehicles to give way to pedestrians already on the road, Heath said having a pedestrian crossing “does not mean you can step off and force traffic to stop. Pedestrians must (also) give right. ”
In Redding, the Traffic Operations Department in the Department of Public Works works assesses requests for pedestrian crossings on city-owned roads and has information on its website.
