St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations unparalleled since the start of the pandemic.

On Monday, there were 45 patients with COVID-19 at Howell Hospital, according to hospital officials.

“It’s the most we’ve seen,” said Dr. Varsha Moudgal, the hospital’s associate chief medical officer.

Moudgal said 31 inpatients are COVID-19 positive with eight in intensive care.

“The entire intensive care unit is made up of COVID patients.”

In addition, she said 14 more people with COVID-19 were admitted to the emergency department on Monday, waiting for beds.

She said the hospital currently has a total of 42 staffed beds.

She said most COVID-19 patients in the hospital are unvaccinated and unvaccinated patients experience more severe cases.
