Illinois coach Bret Bielema misses Iowa game after positive COVID-19 test

Illinois coach Bret Bielema tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Fighting Illini’s game in Iowa on Saturday, he said Tuesday. In a statement released by Illinois, Bielema said he started experiencing mild symptoms on Monday and then tested positive.

“I’m disappointed that I won’t be with our team this week when we travel to Iowa, but I’m grateful that I was vaccinated last week and got the booster shot,” Bielema said.

Assistant head coach George McDonald will act as acting head coach, although Bielema said he will be “as present as possible” during the week at a distance.

“(Bielema) will remain as engaged as possible throughout the week and we are confident in Coach McDonald’s ability to serve in place where needed, including during Saturday’s game in Iowa,” said athletic director Josh Whitman.

The Fighting Illini are 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the Big Ten, and must win their last two games against Iowa and Northwestern to qualify for the bowl.
