The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced Friday that San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. was given an 80-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Clostebol, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment. Tatis’ suspension is effective immediately.
Tatis, 23, is currently on the injured list with a broken left wrist and had recently started a rehabilitation period that left him in line for a return later this month.
Tatis has a .292/.369/.596 slash over 273 games in three big league seasons.
The Padres released the following statement:
“We were surprised and very disappointed to learn that Fernando Tatis Jr. tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Major League Baseball Joint Prevention and Treatment Program and subsequently received an 80-game suspension without payment. We fully support the program and hope Fernando will learn from this experience.”
