IPD warns of social security fraud in Tompkins County

This is a community announcement from the Ithaca Police Department. It was not written by The Ithaca Voice. To submit messages from the community, send them to Matt Butler at [email protected].

Recently, the Ithaca Police Department has learned that individuals claiming to be from the U.S. Inspector General’s Office have contacted residents of Tompkins County, claiming that residents owe money to the Social Security Administration.

When a citizen questions the authenticity of the phone call, the scammers offer to get a local police officer to call back to the citizen. Another scammer will then call back to the citizen and claim to be an Ithaca Police Department Officer and give an actual name of an IPD Officer. Additionally, the telephone number displayed is the Ithaca Police Department telephone number, 607-272-9973.
