Karen Silva-Brown (56), from Methuen Arrested for Stealing Social Security Services – The Valley Patriot

Karen Silva-Brown, 56, was charged with a single charge of theft of public funds. Silva-Brown was released on parole after a first appearance yesterday afternoon before U.S. District Court Judge Judith G. Dein.

According to the indictment, from November 2014 to October 2018, Silva-Brown embezzled approximately $ 60,810 in social benefits intended for her minor child.

The charge of theft of public funds carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $ 250,000 or double the gross profit or loss, whichever is greater. Penalties are imposed by a federal district court based on the U.S. Guidelines for sentencing and other statutory factors.

U.S. Attorney Rachael S. Rollins and Sharon MacDermott, Special Agent in charge of Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General, Office of Investigations, Boston Field Division, issued the statement. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Burzycki of Rollins’ Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case.

The details of the indictment are allegations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the contrary is proved beyond a reasonable doubt by a court.
