A humanitarian convoy trying to reach the besieged port city of Mariupol did not leave Berdyansk on Sunday due to heavy fighting, according to Ukraine’s deputy prime minister and a priest who accompanied the aid vehicles.

Andrey Kovalenko, a bishop from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, said the fighting around the city was too intense. A new attempt would be made on Monday, he added.

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk also said in a video late Sunday that heavy shelling left the convoy trapped in Russian-controlled Berdyansk, about 50 miles southwest of Mariupol. When Zelensky later acknowledged that the trail was “blocked,” Zelensky said more than 130,000 people have been evacuated over six days across Ukraine.
