Leaders of haulier convoys protesting COVID-19 mandates meet with lawmakers to make demands

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Federal leaders change tone Covid-19 pandemic as case rates fall and restrictions are lifted across the country. But some are pushing for them to go further in rolling back the COVID rules.

Organizers of a trucker convoy protests against pandemic mandates met with Senators Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Ron Johnson, R-Wis., Tuesday. Brian Brase, one of the leaders of the “People’s Convoy”, says they have a straightforward list of demands.

“We will continue until the vaccine mandate and state of emergency are lifted. Period,” Brase said.

Both Cruz and Johnson praised the convoy leaders, saying they also want the Biden administration to reverse their policies.

“I want to tell you what a difference it makes. It makes a difference for anyone who has lost their job because of these mandates,” Cruz said.

Last week, the Senate narrowly approved resolutions to end the federal state of emergency and exit vaccine mandate for healthcare professionals.

“We should not have mandates to wear masks. We should not have a mandate to get vaccines. What we should have is to give people good information and they will make good informed decisions,” said Sen. Rick Scott, R- Tear.,.

It is unlikely that the decisions will ever be brought up in Parliament. Even if they passed, the White House has said President Joe Biden would veto them.

“If he vetoes, it just shows how out of touch he is with the American people,” Brase said.

Late. Mark Warner, D-Va., Says strong COVID policies are the reason the country is a better place in the pandemic.

“I was glad to see that mask mandates were taken downbut it must be driven by science, ā€¯Warner said.

He disagrees how the hauliers protest.

“They say they want freedom? They should give people in this region the freedom to go to work, get their children to school, go to the store without hindrancesaid Warner.

Although the convoy does not change its mind, proponents feel it is important to share their message.

“The whole purpose of the people’s convoy is to wake the American people to what is happening,” Senator Johnson said.
