Low vaccination rate responsible for Covid-19 wave in Rockford area

ROCKFORD — The pandemic is far from over in Winnebago County.

That was the message local officials sent to the public Monday when they announced that Winnebago County now sees 502 cases of the virus per 100,000 people and a test positivity rate of 10.1%, indicative of another winter wave.

Sandra Martell, seen here March 16, is director of the Winnebago County Health Department.

539 cases have been reported across the country in the past three days and a total of 126 people, including two babies, are currently hospitalized.

And with Thanksgiving just days away, Sandra Martell, a public health administrator in Winnebago County, said she expects the situation to get worse as unvaccinated people from different households gather to celebrate.

Despite warnings, she said, masking in homes doesn’t happen, and some have not been diligent about staying home when sick.
