Metro Health to Offer Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine to Children Ages 5-11 Beginning Wednesday

SAN ANTONIO The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine will be offered to children ages 5 to 11 starting Wednesday, Metro Health announced.

The vaccinations will take place at the Alamodome mass vaccination site and the vaccine pop-up clinics.

“Having vaccinated your child protects them from serious illness or hospitalization. Getting your child vaccinated reduces the risk of contracting and spreading COVID while they are in school, and children who have been vaccinated can hug their grandparents again,” said Metro Health Director Claude A. Jacob.

A press release states that parents are encouraged to contact their pediatricians’ offices as they will be the first essential site for COVID vaccinations and have been prioritized for distribution.

“As parents, we make decisions every day that affect the future of our children, and I know that vaccines are the most effective way to protect our children from life-threatening diseases, such as COVID-19. I hope all parents will make the choice to have their child vaccinated,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said in the press release.

Metro Health said they, along with the Department of State Health Services, will work with pediatric practices to ensure they have the correct vaccine assignments and all the technical support they need.

“We know this is welcome news for many parents,” Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said. “They have been waiting for the FDA to approve vaccinations for children, and these children, ages 5 to 11, will be protected from COVID. Now they have the opportunity to safely celebrate the holiday season with their families, as well as others who may not have been vaccinated.”

The Food & Drug Administration approved the Pfizer vaccine for the age group of children on Oct. 29. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention then made their official recommendation on Nov. 2.

The FDA said the Pfizer vaccine was found to be 90.7% effective in preventing COVID-19 in children ages 5 to 11. Click here for more information about the vaccine.

The COVID vaccines for children in the age group will also be offered in pharmacies and retail stores.
