The COVID-19 virus is spreading rapidly among deer, and a new study in southern Texas is trying to find out what happens if humans are exposed to these deer.
Dr. Douglas Watts at UT El Paso said there is no evidence that the deer are getting anything but mild symptoms from Covid and that it is currently not transferable back to humans.
Dr. Watts said that not only are humans carrying the virus and serving as possible sources of mutation, many deer are also in the mix.
The concern is that a mutation of the virus is likely to happen with a larger population.
“If we see the same occur in white-tailed deer, then there is definitely a possibility that variants may emerge,” said Dr. Watts. “And it may be that some of these variants can be transmitted to humans and from human to human..”
