NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – EDGAR CRUZ-MATUTE (CRUZ-MATUTE)A 29-year-old citizen of Nicaragua, pleaded guilty and was convicted on August 17, 2022 of illegally using a Social Security number to enroll in a security class to qualify for employment, in violation of Title 42 United States Code, Section 408(a)(7)(B).
U.S. District Court Judge Ivan LR Lemelle convicted CRUZ-MATUTE served until time and one year of supervised release.
According to court documents, CRUZ-MATUTE, a Nicaragua citizen handed over a false Social Security card while attending a pre-employment safety course at the Gulf Coast Safety Council in St. Rose, Louisiana. CRUZ-MATUTE falsely claimed that he had been assigned a Social Security number, when in fact the Social Security number had been assigned to another person by the Social Security Commissioner.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigration, and Customs Enforcement and the Office of the Inspector General of the Social Security Administration in investigating this case.
