No 4th stimulus check for Maryland residents

MARYLAND, USA – After an expensive summer and a long back-to-school shopping list, a new stimulus check probably sounds pretty fun right now! That’s what a VERIFY viewer image promised, but it’s based on old news.

Is there another stimulus check on the way for Maryland residents?

This is wrong.

Not if you are aware of your taxes, as eligible taxpayers must have received the additional payments by early 2021.

If your coffee doesn’t cheer you up today, the sound of a stimulus might, especially if you live in Maryland, where a recent article on a well-known financial site claims you can expect a fourth stimulus check soon. If you qualify, you’ve probably had the money for a while.

The article and image highlighting Maryland’s upcoming incentive check cites the Maryland Relief Act of 2021: “In Maryland, anyone who has applied for an income credit for their taxes in 2019 can get incentive checks worth $500 per family or $300 per person.” .”

However, the Maryland Relief Act gave way to these automatic payments last year, intended as an economic incentive for families and businesses dealing with pandemic impacts, hence, “The Maryland Relief Act of 2021.”

The Comptroller’s Office says more than 420,000 Marylanders were eligible based on their earnings, and most of those payments were processed within days of Governor Larry Hogan signing the bill in February 2021.

Technically, you could still have money on the table if you still have taxes to file through 2019 and qualify for additional incentives, a spokesperson for the Comptroller’s office tells us. But if you’re in the know, don’t waste time refreshing your bank account page looking for an extra stimulus check this year. If you’re on the list for a fourth payment, you should have gotten it last year.

If you live in Virginia, it’s a different story.

Legislators approved a one-time tax credit for Virginia taxpayers who owed money last year: up to $250 for one person, or $500 for a couple. Those will be issued early next month, according to the State Department of Taxation, as an immediate down payment or as a check in the mail.
