Officer charged with murder in death of minor in Georgia detention facility, GBI says

According to a Georgia Bureau of Investigation release, Thomas Lee Hicks, 30, of Waycross, a juvenile correctional officer at the Waycross Regional Youth Detention Center (RYDC), is charged with one count of second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree cruelty to children , and one count of breach of oath of office. Officials said the incident happened on Tuesday, Aug. 9 in Waycross, about 200 miles southwest of Savannah. Then the GBI officials said Douglas Regional Office agents had been asked by the RYDC to investigate a minor who did not respond. according to the GBI, preliminary information shows that a minor was in the facility with an employee and other minors when he lost consciousness. Emergency medical services were contacted and the minor was transported to Memorial Health Hospital in Savannah and later died, officials said. After his arrest on Tuesday, Hicks was incarcerated in the Ware County Jail, officials said.
